What Makes a High-Quality Candle?: A Maker’s Guide
With so many candles on the market, it can be hard to tell what separates a truly high-quality, luxury candle from one that simply looks nice on a shelf. As candle makers, we believe the difference is found in the details — from ingredients and testing, right through to the finishing touches.
It starts with how the candle is made
High-quality candles are rarely mass-produced. Hand-poured candles, especially those made in small batches, allow for greater consistency and quality control. Each pour can be monitored, adjusted, and checked, rather than rushed through an automated process. Small-batch production means all of our candles are inspected before it reaches your home.
Wax matters more than you think
The type of wax used has a huge impact on how a candle performs. We use 100% natural soy wax, which burns more slowly and cleanly than many cheap paraffin-based alternatives. A slow burn not only gives you more hours of enjoyment, but also helps fragrance disperse evenly through the room, without producing excessive soot.
Fragrance: quality over shortcuts
A high-quality candle should smell just as good lit as it does cold. This comes down to using a high percentage of high-quality fragrance oil, carefully blended and properly tested with the wax. Cheaper candles often cut corners here, resulting in weak scent throw or overpowering, artificial notes. A well-made scented candle should be balanced, room-filling, and long-lasting.
Wick choice is not an afterthought
One of the most common issues with lower-quality candles is tunnelling — when a candle burns straight down the middle, wasting wax around the edges. This usually comes down to the wrong wick size or thickness. Choosing the correct wick is essential for an even burn, good scent throw, and safety. That’s why we performance and safety test every single scent. It's not glamorous but it's such an important part of candle making.
We also use 100% cotton wicks, carefully matched to each candle, to ensure your candle doesn't tunnel.
The finishing touches matter
Quality isn’t just what’s inside the jar. Hand labelling and wrapping each candle adds a level of care that machines can’t replicate. Every product passes through human hands, with attention given to presentation as well as performance.
Our candles are plastic-free, poured into amber glass jars that give off a warm, soft glow and add a subtle touch of luxury to any space.

A high-quality candle should burn evenly, fill your room with scent, and feel considered from start to finish. It should be a given, but sadly there are a lot of cheap or poor-performing candles out there.
